The European Commission's new cultural and creative strategy

In September 2012, the European Commission has published its new strategy for increasing the competition capability of the cultural and creative sectors. (Midday Express)

On September 26, 2012, the European Commission presented its new strategy, which aims to explore the job-creating and growth-promoting effect of the European Union's cultural and creative sector. The companies and organizations operating in the fields including architecture, cultural heritage, design, festivals, film and television, music and arts make 4.5% of the European Union's total GDP. But the creative and cultural sector is facing some serious challenges because of the digital transition, the globalization, and the fragmentation of markets.

The Commission's new strategy aims to improve the competitiveness of the cultural and creative industries; and to increase their export opportunities. "Europe's cultural and creative sector is necessary not for only the cultural diversity but it has an important role in the social and economic development of the member states and regions, as well" - said Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Commissioner about the new strategy. The Commission's new strategy has been published in the document entitled Promoting Cultural and Creative Sectors for growth and jobs in the EU.
