Schubert, who was avoided by success throughout his life, wrote some grander works that were hardly performed in his lifetime. Still, he wrote compositions for the theatre, since his message could not be postponed, even if he wrote it for the drawer. It is the overture from Rosamunda that is mostly played, as Schubert's music is impressive even without a stage. Mieczysław Karłowicz, who lived a century later, lived a short life just like Schubert, and his Violin Concerto is imbued with his love of Tchaikovsky and Wagner – and the passion of a young man with an unfortunate fate. Prokofiev, on the other hand, set to music the well-known fatal love story of history, not the first and not the last, but still created memorable music in his Romeo and Juliet Suite.
