Zoltán Kodály: Twenty Hungarian Folksongs (excerpts) – scored by Zoltán Kocsis
Ernst von Dohnányi: Suite in F-sharp minor, Op. 19
As a composer, Dohnányi was already looked down upon by many in his day for his conservative and beautiful music in a decadent era. Yet few have soared in composition as Dohnányi did in his Symphonic Minutes, his Suite in F-sharp minor, or Kodály in the world of folk songs.
Even Dohnányi's critics note that his works show indisputable superior craftsmanship, colourful imagination, and compositional structure. So, although his pieces are not innovative, they are rather bravura, likeable, and extremely colourful. Although Kodály was a rather significant composer, he set his heart on teaching folk music. He preferred to talk about the world rather than harmony or counterpoint. This concert will feature works in which both masters are truly at home and created with lots of enthusiasm. And their enthusiasm is still contagious-here's your chance, take it! –
