With Pleasure
Wynton Marsalis: Trumpet Concerto
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.5 in E minor, Op.64
All three composers of the evening might have said after receiving the request to compose their pieces: "With pleasure!", since all three pieces brought great success to the creators, and in many cases, the possibility of composing could be considered a lifeline.
Bartók's Dance Suite was completed for Budapest's 50th birthday. Around this time, Bartók was so sidelined that he began to consider himself a hobby composer, so the request came at the right time, and the piece garnered great success. Wynton Marsalis became well-known as a trumpet soloist, and the fact that in 2023 he was asked by the Swiss Verbier Festival to write a new trumpet concerto meant that he was recognised by the international profession not only as a performer, but also as a composer. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 is one of the three symphonies of fate, in which the composer, encouraging himself, declares that bitter fate can be overcome. Enrich yourself with joy!
