Between 2000 and 2009, Zsolt Hamar was the lead conductor of our city’s orchestra — at the time when the Pecs Symphonic Orchestra transformed into the Pannon Philharmonic, becoming first a national and then an internationally known ensemble. Hamar, who has since taken over from Zoltán Kocsis to lead the National Philharmonic, will return to the head of the Pecs ensemble with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. The fourth movement, the Adagietto written for strings and harp, can often be heard as a separate program number and is one of the composer’s most popular works. In contrast to this, Alban Berg’s Lulu titled opera is a rare guest of the stage, and performing parts of its music is also uncommon. Due to Berg’s death at the end of 1935, he couldn’t complete all three acts of his theatrical work, however one year earlier a medley was created of the half-finished composition, resulting in a 5-part symphonic suite including a soprano solo. Orsolya Sáfár, the Hungarian National Opera’s chamber singer will collaborate on the performance of the Lulu Suite.
