Concertmaster as a composer

Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra is greeting Pécs with a special concert on Pécs City Day.
Among other pieces, the orchestra is playing Zoltán Bánfalvi’s composition in the concert hall of Kodály Centre on 1 September, 2015.

Being composed by a leading member of the orchestra is not the only interesting fact about the piece. It is also interesting that the composition includes solo parts for two instruments, violin and piano, at the same time. A The violin solo is performed by Dániel Papp, the other concert master of the orchestra, while its counterpart, the piano solo, is played by József Balog.

Apart from meeting the formal and content requirements for classical concerto pieces, Zoltán Bánfalvi focused on experience, expression of emotions and richness of sound. His composition having romantic features is performed between two pieces from the aforementioned period, Tchaikovsky, 1812 Overture and Ferenc Liszt Les Preludes.  Aside from the stylistic elements of the period and the composition by Bánfalvi, the two pieces are connected by their warlike theme; the Tchaikovsky Overture refers to the Russian battles signifying the turning point of the Napoleonic  Wars while Liszt’s symphonic poem chose to depict the duality of battle and victory based on the contemplations of the French writer-poet Lamartine.

The festive concert is conducted by Tibor Bogányi, chief conductor of Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra.
