Kaddish
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Passover Psalm
Leonard Bernstein: Symphony No. 3 “Kaddish”
It was 80 years ago when the greatest tragedy of 20th-century history – the Holocaust – came to a peak. We still cannot fathom and are forced to remain silent in shock how something like this could have happened in an enlightened Europe. By no means, however, is the Jewish tradition silent, where the text of the Mourner’s Kaddish has accompanied the time of grief and mourning for millennia, and despite the loss, it upliftingly entrusts the dead to God's goodness and mercy. Neither are the arts silent, as several composers have worked with the text of the Kaddish. At this concert, we will remember, mourn and seek comfort with such works.
