During this concert, three prominent musicians of the Pannon Philharmonic will work together, though only the night’s conductor, Gilbert Varga, will fill his usual place. The other leading conductor, Tibor Bogányi, will collaborate as a cellist, performing Zoltán Bánfalvi’s Capriccio. This is not the first time that the orchestra’s concert master steps in front of his Pecs audience as a composer. His greatly successful pieces draw from the turn of the 19th and 20th century late romantic and jazz world, concentrating on experience and richness in sound and color. This is, in part, the world that Béla Bartók turned his back to at the beginning of the century, when he opened up the world of Hungary and its neighboring country’s folk music. Two Romanian Dances - which is not to be confused with Romanian folk dances - was originally written for piano, and the first was arranged by the composer himself with the title Romanian Dance. The Hungarian composer’s work is framed by excerpts from Manuel De Falla’s opera, separated into freestanding pieces, and Maurice Ravel’s Spanish Rhapsody.
