About the Programme

Gilbert Varga is a real world-traveller conductor; there is almost no corner of the world where he hasn't been and conducted yet. John Adams"s short piece, premiered just twenty years ago, earned a huge success at the BBC Proms; and Barber's Violin Concerto belongs to the most exiting 20th century pieces of the genre. Prokofiev is another continent and another world. The two suites of Romeo and Juliet may be the most popular composition of the Russian master, not without a reason: it is a characteristic and unique retelling of a timeless story. The son of the legendary violinist-conductor, Tibor Varga began as a violinist, too but an accident broke his promising soloist career apart. Thus he got onto the conductor pulpit to run one of the most versatile careers from the great American orchestras through the Philarmonia Hungarica –for whose first Hungarian tour he came with Sir Yehudi Menuhin– to Taiwan, where he is still the musical director.  Kristóf Baráti is one of the most sought after violinists of today; thus he is a globetrotter, as well.

"The flow-experience may be the most important feeling that could awake during a performance of a musical work, both in the performer and the audience. […] I think, no other art form can create contact among people so directly; and maybe that's why it has such a magical effect on you.” Kristóf Baráti
